Cover Story
Patrick J. Balthrop, President and CEO, Luminex Corporation

In November 2005, Luminex Corporation received Frost & Sullivan's 2005 Clinical Diagnostics Technology of the Year Award.  The Frost & Sullivan annual Best Practices Awards honor world-class companies for quality performance and meritorious achievements.  The clinical diagnostics award is given to a company that has introduced a clinical diagnostics technology that shows the potential to become an industry standard, achieve a high degree of market acceptance and maintain a competitive posture in several market segments.

Luminex introduced its xMAP technology-based multiplexing platform in 1999.  Patrick Balthrop, Luminex's President and CEO, shares his view of the status of the diagnostics industry in 2005 and how breakthrough technologies such as Luminex xMAP technology contribute to the future strength of the industry.

Patrick J. Balthrop joined Luminex in May of 2004 and was elected to the Board of Directors shortly thereafter.  Prior to joining Luminex, Balthrop served as president of Fisher Healthcare, a Fisher Scientific International company.  He also served in a number of leadership positions for over 20 years with Abbott Laboratories, primarily in Abbott's Diagnostics Division, including head of worldwide commercial diagnostics operations.  Balthrop has more than 25 years of experience in the industry including R&D, manufacturing, sales and marketing, intellectual property and technology management, and international operations.  He holds an MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management of Northwestern University, and a B.S. in Biology from Spring Hill College.  In addition to his Luminex responsibilities, Balthrop serves on the Board of Directors of Howard Brown Health Center in Chicago.
